In Maryland, the scope of practice for chiropractors is defined as a drugless method of health care based on the knowledge that anything causing interference with the proper transmission of nerve impulses may be the actual cause of many diseases. Doctors of chiropractic medicine in Maryland may diagnose and locate misaligned or displaced vertebrae and, by adjustment and manual manipulation of the spine and other skeletal components, treat disorders of the human body. They may not use drugs or surgery, or practice osteopathy, obstetrics, or any other branch of medicine. A Doctor of Chiropractic in Maryland may also choose to instruct a patient on diet and exercise.

These steps provide information on how to become a chiropractor in Maryland:

  1. All applicants must first obtain a bachelor degree from an accredited college.
  2. Applicants must then graduate from one of a list of 14 CCE (Council on Chiropractic Education)-approved chiropractic colleges with a Doctor in Chiropractic.
  3. Take and pass the NBCE (National Board of Chiropractic Examiners) exam parts I, II, III, IV and Physiotherapy).
  4. Submit a completed application, an application fee of $200 and an examination fee of $300 to the Maryland Board of Chiropractic Examiners.
  5. Take and pass the Maryland Jurisprudence Exam with a minimum score of 75%.
