Becoming a Dentist in Québec - QC

Within the country of Canada, each province is charged with governing its own dentists working within that province. The Ordre des dentistes du Québec (ODQ) is the regulatory authority responsible for licensing dentists to practice in Québec.

For students wishing to discover how to become a dentist in Québec, this is the place to start.

  1. Receive a DCS (Diploma of College Studies), a bachelor degree in one of the sciences or the equivalent. This, along with an excellent academic record and grade point average, is a prerequisite for admission into dental school.
  2. Pass the Dental Aptitude Test (DAT), given in French or English.
  3. Enroll in a dental school training program. Graduate in four or five years with a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree.
  4. You may choose to continue your dentistry studies in a specialization or seek licensing as a general dentist in Québec.
  5. Take and pass the National Dental Examination Board of Canada’s examination that will assess your technical skills and knowledge.
  6. Show appropriate knowledge of French and English.
  7. Pay a licensing fee of $1182.95.
  8. Become entered on the Roll of the Order of the ODQ, which lists dentists in good standing who are authorized to have a dental career in Québec.
