According to the North Carolina Board of Nursing, the scope of practice for pediatric nurse practitioners in North Carolina includes services to children form birth to young adulthood, and their families in areas such as the promotion and maintenance of health, prevention of illness; diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute and chronic illness; guidance and counseling for the family; prescribing therapeutic measures, tests, procedures and drugs; and enlisting the advise and expertise of other medical professionals when necessary.

Pediatric nurse practitioners typically begin their career as registered nurses who have a natural affinity for and the necessary skill set to work with both children of all ages and their parents or primary guardians. Many nurses then return to school either full- or part-time in order to further enhance their education and skills by obtaining a master’s degree which will allow them to serve at a higher level of medical care.

The North Carolina Board of Nursing requires that nurse practitioners complete an accredited program that includes a minimum of 400 hours of classroom education and an additional 400 hours of supervised clinical experience. In addition, once nurse practitioners have completed the program of study, they must successfully pass a national certification examination, as well as maintain their licensure by obtaining 50 hours of continuing education credit every year.
