Becoming a Physician Assistant in New Mexico
1. Find and complete a Physician Assistants training program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation.
2. Complete a national examination required in the United States.
Graduates who wish to earn a position as a Physican Assistant in New Mexico, should note that they are required to take the PANCE, or the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination before receiving a license. Consisting of 360 questions, the examination requires a fee and can be taken at any of the 200 testing locations across the nation. The PANCE is administered and graded by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Upon successful examination completion, you will receive notification that you have earned national certification, which is required in order to pursue Physician Assistant jobs in New Mexico.
3. Fill out an application for licensure through the New Mexico Medical Board.
When completing an application, make sure you include transcripts and proof of national certification. You will also need to send in a personal check or money order for $150 as an application fee and $36 for a background check, for a total of $186.
4. Allow a Criminal Background Check and Fingerprinting.
Once the application has been received, fingerprinting cards and a criminal background check form should be sent to you in the mail. Prior fingerprinting cannot be accepted and fingerprinting cards are not available before the application has been submitted. After receiving the card and background check form, fill out the form and get fingerprinted. The application process does not proceed any further until the New Mexico Medical Board has the results from both the fingerprinting and criminal background check.
