How to Become a Respiratory Therapist in Minnesota – MN

What steps should I take to earn a state license and begin pursuing Minnesota Respiratory Therapist careers?

This is a great question to ponder when considering a career as a Respiratory Therapist in Minnesota.  Below is a list of steps that can lead you along the path to a career as a state licensed Respiratory Therapist in Minnesota.

Steps to Become a Respiratory Therapist in Minnesota

Complete a certification examination.

First, provide transcripts to the National Board of Respiratory Care proving that you have met the educational requirements for Respiratory Therapists.  Next, sign up to take the entry-level examination, or the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) examination.  There is a $190 fee in order to take this examination.

The CRT examination is the only required examination for respiratory therapy. However, if you want to become nationally registered, you should also take the Registered Respiratory Therapist examination, which includes both a written examination and a simulation examination. There is a fee of nearly $400 to take both portions of this examination. The RRT examination can be taken any time after the initial examination is passed, including after employment has been achieved.

Fill out the Minnesota State application form.

Go to the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice website and download the application form.  You can also call the Board and request one to be sent to you.  When it is time for submission, include transcripts, evidence of examination completion, and your national certification.  There is a fee to apply for the license as well.

Congratulations on completing the requirements for becoming a licensed Respiratory Therapist in Minnesota.  Locate your dream job and begin practicing Respiratory Therapy.

Renew your license.

Every two years you will be required to renew your Respiratory Therapist license.  A renewal form will be sent to you in advance.  It is important to complete the renewal form and necessary educational requirements prior to the expiration date to prevent any lapse or late fees.  Minnesota requires individuals working as Respiratory Therapists to earn 24 hours of Continuing Education units within each two year cycle.  Like many states, you do not need to send in proof for the Continuing Education units at the renewal time.  However, in the event that you are selected for an audit, make sure you can show proof to verify that you have met the educational requirement.
