How to Become a Pharmacy Technician in Idaho

According to the United States Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook for 2010-2011, the number of employed pharmacy technicians will rise from 326,000 in 2008 to a projected 426,000 in 2018. This predicted 31% employment growth is expected on a national as well as local level, and Idaho is no exception. Each state has its own individually created and executed government agency that provides pharmacy technicians with state outlined guidelines and policies. In Idaho, the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy mandates the specific criteria necessary to work in the field of pharmacy, including pharmacy technicians.  In Idaho, pharmacy technician certification programs are available through both accredited online schools and campus-based schools.

On the job training conducted by a licensed pharmacist is mandatory in Idaho. Specifically, pharmacists are expected to train pharmacy technicians in the preparation, distribution and compounding of medicine while maintaining formal records.

Registration through the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy is also mandatory in order to work as a pharmacy technician in Idaho. The only general requirements needed to register include:

  1. At least 18 years old
  2. High School diploma or equivalent education
  3. Be of good moral character with temperate habits
