Dental hygienists and dental assistants work along side of dentists in almost every aspect of their work these days. From record keeping to x-rays and teeth cleaning to surgery preparation, they are a vital part of the dental team. There are currently around 173,000 dental hygienists in the United States. There are approximately 4,000 registered dental hygienists in Indiana, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Steps to Becoming a Dental Hygienist in Indiana

  1. Take preparatory high school courses in biology, chemistry, and mathematics.
  2. Be 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  3. Visit the American Dental Association (ADA) webpage ( to locate accredited schools that offer associate’s degrees in dental hygiene in Indiana.
  4. Apply to an accredited dental hygiene program.
  5. Complete a dental hygiene program and earn a degree.
  6. Become certified in CPR.
  7. Pass written and clinical licensing examinations as required by the Indiana State Board of Dentistry.
