Midwifery School in Indiana - IN

Part of a tradition that goes back to the earliest recorded times, midwives care for women throughout pregnancy, labor and delivery, as well as after the birth of the baby. In a more contemporary sense, certified nurse midwives (CNM) are educated and licensed registered nurses who may also provide annual gynecological exams, family planning, and counseling in wellness and nutrition.

While some may have a misconception that midwives are only called upon when a mother chooses a home birth, many hospitals, including the Community Hospital East in Indianapolis, actually offer the option of using a certified nurse midwife. This option is only made available to women with normal pregnancies free of complications. In the event that complications should arise during the birth, the midwife can work with obstetricians or specialists to surmount them.

Midwifery courses in Indiana are meant to cover details of antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum care. Classes also typically cover lactation and how to prepare the new mother to have a successful experience nursing her newborn, especially in Indiana, one of the progressive states that has a law in place to protect a woman’s right to breastfeed in the workplace. Students should also complete a midwifery clinical practicum under the supervision of a certified nurse midwife as part of their study.
