Developed due to shortages in primary care physicians, physician assistants have become an important part of the medical profession.  Physician assistants are under the supervision of a qualifying surgeon or physician at all times.  Typical duties of a physician assistant include preliminary diagnosis of patients, reviewing medical history, ordering and examining X rays, and treatment of injuries that are considered minor.  Physician assistants may also be qualified to prescribe medications for patients if approved by the supervising physician. Specialties include primary care, internal medicine, and general surgery, as well as a wide range of other more specific fields.

Physician assistant is a profession that requires continuing education.  A minimum of 100 hours of continuing education is required every two years for an active certification. The AAPA organizes the courses, and they can be scheduled directly through the AAPA, or through participating universities.  Continuing education courses allow physician assistants to know the current techniques and options in medicine, therefore CE is a vital part of the profession.
