Surgical Technologist Training in Kentucky

Surgical technologists beginning a career in Kentucky can look forward to a positive occupational outlook. The Kentucky Department of Employment Services expects the number of surgical technologists employed within the state will rise from 1,647 in 2006 to 2,140 in 2016. This employment growth is predicted to open up 493 jobs statewide which equates to a 29.9% increase in employment. In order to take advantage of Kentucky’s widening job market, health care professionals and students alike should begin their careers by first gaining surgical technologist training.

Fortunately, Kentucky is home to many training and education programs that will prepare students to become surgical technologists. Community, technical, and vocational schools, as well as private colleges and online schools are great places to gain surgical technology education and training. Students should select a program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Presently, the CAAHEP lists seventeen different accredited programs throughout Kentucky. These programs typically prepare students to sit for a national competency examination that is administered by either the National Surgical Assistant Association or the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist. By successfully passing examination, surgical technologists can then obtain a license to legally practice in Kentucky. This occupational license is granted by the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure.
