1. The road to becoming a medical technician in the state of Louisiana begins with career training at one of the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLA) accredited online or campus based Louisiana medical technician schools. It is a 2-year associate’s degree program. For a more advanced degree there is also a 4-year Bachelor of Science in Laboratory Technology.
2. Certification.  The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is in charge for certification for medical technicians. You will need to verify your educational training, fill out an application, and be scheduled to sit for the examination at a time and location that is convenient for you. There is a $185 application fee for the exam. You will be notified of test results in ten business days and then be eligible for state licensing.
3. State Licensing Louisiana is among the states that require licensing for clinical laboratory personnel, including medical technicians. This measure is in place to ensure the safety and health of the public and to maintain high standards of professionalism in laboratories. The Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners is responsible for licensure of medical technicians. To be granted a license, the individual must bring ID, proof of education and national certification, and the appropriate application documents. A criminal background check is also required. There is a filing fee of $25. The Board will usually notify of their decision in 30 days.
