To be certified and licensed in Maine, you do not necessarily have to attend one of the Physician Assistant Schools in Maine.  However, students who apply for jobs in the state where they attend schooling have an advantage because of the professional contacts they develop while doing clinical rotations. 

There are a number of fully accredited Master level programs through Physician Assistant schools in Maine.  To be admitted, applicants must have a Bachelor degree and preferably some work or volunteer experience in the medical field.  Applications are typically accepted between May 1 and October 1.  The two year program includes one year of classroom instruction and a second year of clinical rotations.  Rotations take place in various clinical settings, giving students exposure and practice in a range of environments and specialties. 

Upon graduation, students will be prepared to register for and take the national certification exam and seek employment. 

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Physician Assistants in Portland, Lewiston, Bangor, West Scarborough and Sanford, Maine may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Maine Medical Center, Mercy Hospital, Brighton Medical Center and St. Josephs Hospital.
