How to Become a Physical Therapist Assistant in Maryland – MD

1. Accredited Training Program
Most Maryland physical therapy assistant training programs take 2 years to complete. To graduate from the program with an associate’s degree, courses in Health Sciences must be taken. Other courses include English Composition, Algebra, and Medical Terminology. Required courses include Anatomy, Physiology, and Psychology. Treatment techniques are also required. While completing the training program, it’s often permitted for students to participate in supervised clinical settings to gain first-hand knowledge of the profession. This form of training prepares graduates for entry-level positions in the medical profession. Although an associate’s degree is the state minimum educational requirement, employers often hirer those that have sought further training.

2. Jurisprudence Examination
The Jurisprudence Examination or the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) is required in order to become licensed in the state of Maryland. The exam is administered by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT). An associate’s degree, CPR certification, and first aid training are required before the exam can be taken. Once the exam is successfully passed, an application can be submitted to the state of Maryland to become a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant.

3. State License
To legally practice as a Physical Therapy Assistant in Maryland, a state license must be obtained after completing the certification exam. An application can be submitted to the Occupational Therapy Board in Maryland along with the Jurisprudence Examination test scores. The board will then review the applicants’ educational background and exam scores. Upon approval, a Physical Therapist Assistant will then be able to legally practice in Maryland. A license renewal will be needed every even numbered year by June 30th to continue to practice in the profession. If the licensed is not renewed by the expiration date, it will be revoked and additional fees may be needed in order to reinstate the license.
