Training for Veterinary Technicians in Massachusetts

Across the country, the demand for veterinary techs is high--and Massachusetts is no exception. People see their pets as family members and are willing to provide extensive medical care for them, leading to greater demand for veterinary services. In addition, many older veterinary technicians are retiring, creating a need for replacement workers. The majority of veterinary technicians find work in animal hospitals under the direction of veterinarians, usually treating dog, cats, and other small animals. Some veterinary technicians work with horses and other large animals. Veterinary technicians also find employment in animal shelters, biological research labs, zoos, and animal control agencies.

Accredited veterinary technician training programs in Massachusetts teach skills such as animal nursing, clinical diagnostic procedures, administering medication, preparing animals for surgery, assisting with surgical and dental procedures, collecting laboratory specimens, and maintaining lab and surgical equipment. Vet techs also are taught how to use X-ray machines safely to produce diagnostic images.

Community colleges and online Massachusetts vet tech schools offer two-year veterinary technician programs formally accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA). Graduating from these programs gives you the degree associate of applied science (AAS).
