How to Become a Massage Therapist in California - CA
Recently, there was a new legislation that passed allowing California to certify massage therapists. It is a voluntary statewide certification credential for massage therapy. As of September 1, 2009, massage therapy certification in California began being issued. Since this is voluntary certification, this means that if you choose to become certified through the California Massage Therapy Council (CAMT), then you are able to practice massage therapy statewide without the burden of multiple permits, in addition to associated fees. If you choose not to pursue massage therapy certification in California through the CAMT, then you cannot use the term “certified? in your professional title. You would still need to maintain a local permit in the city that you practice, as well. In California there are two levels of certification. The first level is Certified Massage Therapist (CMT). The second level is Certified Massage Practitioner (CMP). The level of certification depends on the amount of education that has been completed by the individual.
An individual must complete the application and pay the appropriate fee, which is currently $150. The certification lasts two years. At the renewal period, one must pay the renewal fee that is currently $125 to remain certified. California is a state that does not require a separate examination for certification. However, one must past a national examination and have two years experience to be eligible for state certification. The national examination is administered by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB). An applicant must undergo a fingerprint and background check. On a side note, California does not regulate the scope of practice for massage therapy. Therefore, one must refer to their own insurance provider for these rules and regulations. Once all the appropriate steps have been taken to become certified, then you are able to pursue a professional career as a massage therapist in the state of California. www.camtc.org/FAQ/mtfaq.htm
