How to Become an MRI Technician in Minnesota

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development has predicted that by 2019 the number of radiology technologists (including MRI technicians) will rise to 5,447 from 4,324 in 2009. This occupational projection indicates a 26% employment growth trend in the coming decade, which will open up over a thousand new job positions statewide by 2019. Those interested in joining this fast-growing occupation can begin a career as a MRI technician in Minnesota by engaging in formal education that provides MRI technician training and radiology technology.

Most MRI technician training programs are found in state colleges and universities, academic institutions, vocational schools, and private colleges throughout the state. An estimated 70% of all MRI technicians in Minnesota currently hold at least an associate’s degree in radiology, sonography, or magnetic imaging resonance. Ideally, students should complete an educational program that incorporates clinical training experience within its required coursework as is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (or an equally recognized accreditation agency). After graduating from a MRI-related education program, students can increase their marketability by getting registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). By registering with the ARRT, MRI technicians can gain certification as a professional in the field. Though optional, many employers insist on certification prior to employment.
