Surgical Technologist Training in Minnesota

Presently, according to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development there are approximately 1,840 surgical technologists actively employed in the state. Furthermore, the employment growth rate for surgical technologists is 33.9% higher than all other occupations combined. In addition, many health care professionals and students seek a career in Minnesota because the state government does not require surgical technologists to become registered, gain certification, or acquire an occupational license to legally practice.

The best way to gain entry into the field is by completing post-secondary vocational training. Luckily, Minnesota offers several surgical technology programs that offer both classroom-based and clinical training. For those unable or unwilling to commute, there are also online and distance learning opportunities that offer similar education in surgical technology. Most programs in Minnesota will prepare students to sit for a national competency examination that is administered by a certification agency such as the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist or the National Board of Surgical Technology and Medical Assisting. Upon passing examination, the title of Certified Surgical Technology (CST) is granted. Although optional, gaining national certification does prove occupational aptitude and professional which employers favor. Students that intend on getting certified should look for education and training programs that are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, an equivalently established accrediting agency.
