Missouri Medical Transcription Training Programs

Education
Medical transcriptionist training in Missouri usually consists of either a one-year certificate program or a two-year associate degree in medical transcription from a community or vocational college. Programs include courses in medical terminology, anatomy, legal issues and English (punctuation and grammar), as well as a supervised internship. Some medical transcription certificate programs in Missouri require applicants to type a minimum of 45 words per minute, an important skill in the profession because a majority of the transcriptionists’ time is devoted to preparing emergency room notes, medical histories and consultation reports. Credits from a medical transcription certificate program in Missouri may frequently be transferred to an associate degree program.

Examination
Recent graduates, along with other potential employees in the medical transcription field who have less than two years experience in acute care, may take the Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) examination. Those with at least two years of experience in acute care may to take the Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) examination. Both exams are offered by the AHDI and may be scheduled online at http://www.prometric.com/adhi.  Fees for the RMT exam are $200 for non-members and $120 for AHDI members. CMT exam fees are $275 for non-members and $195 for members. Those with credentials must keep them current by earning continuing education credits every three years.

Missouri Association for Medical Transcription

The Missourci Association for Medical Transcription is affiliated with the Association of Healthcare Documentation Integrity and consists of three chapters—Central Missouri, Greater, St. Louis and Tri-State. The purpose of the organization is to promote the professional improvement, integrity and maintenance of medical transcription and to recognize and support the members who work toward these goals.
