Computer and keyboarding courses will make up the rest of the requirements, which upon completion will serve as a foundation for success for any medical transcriptionist.

After two years of field, a transcriptionist may apply to be certified via the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI). This exam will allow a transcriptionist to place a CMT after their name, which opens the door to better job opportunities. The certificate last for three years and must be renewed at the end of the three-year window. A 30 unit continued education requirement must be fulfilled before the renewal can proceed. Classes recommended for the continuing education requirement are those that the transcriptionist feels can make up for any lapsed knowledge in medical technology and definitions, computer technology, or English.
