Education Required for Certified Nursing Assistants in Nebraska

Training to become a Nurse Aide in Nebraska is offered in vocational-technical centers, nursing care facilities, and community colleges. Courses include nutrition, anatomy, physiology, infection control, communication skills, rights of residents, and personal care skills.  Most Certified Nursing Assistant training programs within the state of Nebraska are at least 6.5 credit hours in length, to meet the Nebraska Department of Health's requirements for a Nurse Aide. In order to be eligible to enroll in CNA training, most schools require a current Tuberculosis Test and Assessment Testing in English writing and reading skills. In addition to the regular course cost, CNA training also requires you to purchase a textbook, workbook, white clothing and white shoes for the clinical portion of the training, and sometimes a watch that has a second hand. The average total cost of a CNA program in Nebraska is $400.  Schools that offer Nurse Aide/CNA training programs also offer optional Medication Aide training, which certifies the student to be able to give medications as part of their job.

Nebraska CNA training programs often require passage of the written and skills Nebraska state exams before students can graduate.  The state's written exam of 50 multiple-choice questions requires a passing grade of 70% or better.  The Department of Health and Human Services administers the nurse aide exam monthly at various locations across the state.

For the skills exam, students must demonstrate six skills selected at random that represent skills taught in nurse aide courses. They must pass all six skills, at 70% or better for each skill,  in order to pass the skills exam.   Testers arrange skills exam directly with the students, usually at their place of employment (hospital or nursing facility). 
Once the written and skills exams are passed, the individual is listed on the Nebraska Nurse Aide registry.
