Medical Transcription Schools in Nebraska

Because of the clerical, medical, and self-employed aspects of the medical transcriptionist profession, it is important to not only have a solid foundation in these three subjects, but also to continually stay ahead of the game through continual education.

The certificate process in Nebraska can be finished through a nationally recognized educational institution, usually a community college. The program is a one-year process and the student will need to take courses in medical terminology, keyboarding, computer technology, and English. The broad spectrum of courses may sound strange for a medical based occupation, but the transcriptionist position requires a bit of everything in the certificate program.  There are a variety of Nebraska medical transcription schools available, including many online options.

Once the certificate program is complete, a transcriptionist should work for two years in the field before going for the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) certification exam. Once passing this exam, there is a 30-unit continuing education requirement to renew the certification (which expires every three years). The type of courses needed for the continuing education units are similar to those needed for the community college certificate program. Not only will these types of courses ensure that a transcriptionist remains certified with the AHDI, but it will keep them up to date with the latest technology and information in regards to the medical field.

It is also recommended to have some knowledge in business practices due to the self-employed nature of the transcriptionist business.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Medical Transcriptionists in Omaha, Lincoln, Bellevue and Grand Island, Nebraska may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Bryan LGH Medical Center, Lincoln Surgical Hospital, Alegent Healthcare and Blue Cross of Nebraska.
