Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program in Maine - ME

Neonatal nurse practitioner programs in Maine are designed for students who live in Sanford, Portland, Bangor, Lewiston, West Scarborough and other parts of the state. These educational programs may be completed online or in a more traditional school setting. Neonatal nurse practitioner education consists of getting a minimum of a master’s degree, although the norm for nurse practitioners is quickly moving towards the standard being a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. Classroom time is balanced with clinical experience to produce the most competent, skilled and effective neonatal nurse practitioners possible.

Certification is also necessary after completing graduate nursing school. The National Certification Corporation, or NCC, is the most used organization when testing for one’s neonatal nurse practitioner certification. The test costs $250 if you choose the paper/pencil format or $300 if you’d rather take a computer examination. Registration deadlines are usually in July, with the exam being offered in September in Portland only. The exam consists of four sections, focusing on general assessment in the perinatal and neonatal stages, general management of the neonate and of the family, the disease process (including physiology, pathophysiology and embryology), and professional issues (such as ethics and legal issues).
