Steps to Acquiring Medical Billing and Coding Certification in Nevada

  1. Prior to enrolling in a Nevada medical billing certificate program or comprehensive program for medical billing and coding in Nevada, students must have a high school diploma or the equivalency.
  2. Though the state of Nevada doesn’t require it, most of the time prospective medical billers and coders will need a medical billing and coding certificate at minimum to obtain a position in the field. Some employers may also require an associate’s degree. A bachelor’s degree in a related field can also be obtained in order to further one’s career.
  3. Locate and enroll at a vocational school or community college that offers a specific training and certification program for medical billing and coding specialists.

  4. Complete the required coursework.
  5. Research and choose a certification agency, such as the American Medical Billing Association. If you have a particular employer in mind, find out and utilize the preferred certification organization to increase your chances of being hired. Be sure your chosen agency offers the Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist (CMRS) certification exam, which is awarded by the Certifying Board of the American Billing Association. Depending on the nature of the intended employer, other tests and certifications may also be applicable.
  6. Become a CMRS by taking and passing the organization’s required examination, and additional courses as required
