Medical Assistant Certification in New Hampshire – NH

The only prerequisites needed to become enrolled in medical assistant schools in New Hampshire are a high school diploma and the completion of a medical assisting program from an accredited college.

There are several different certifications that can be earned with the most common being the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential as established by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). Other certifications available include the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) endorsed by the American Medical Technologists as well as specialty certifications for those working in fields such as Podiatry or Ophthalmology.

While national certification is not required, it does offer the best prospect for employment as it provides proof of competency in the field. The National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) oversee the administration of the certification tests.

The CMA certification exam handbook is available at the following site: http://aama-ntl.org/resources/library/ExamApp.pdf

Recertification and Continuing Education

Once the Certified Medical Assistant credential has been earned, it is necessary to recertify every five years. The American Association of Medical Assistants offers two alternatives for the recertification process. One option is to retake and pass the national exam in order to demonstrate competency in the field. The other option is to complete continuing education requirements. For Certified Medical Assistants, they must accrue a specific amount of credits within the following categories: clinical, administrative, and general. Continuing education credits can be obtained by attending conferences or completing coursework specific to that occupation. These requirements are established by the profession’s National Association to help keep members current in their field. National conferences, local chapter workshops, self-study courses and other seminars are excellent opportunities to educate professionals of current best practices and efficient service delivery options.
