Midwifery School in New Jersey - NJ

Midwives in New Jersey work in a wide variety of facilities and settings, including hospitals, clinics, birth centers, private gynecological and obstetric medical practices, and home offices.  Often, they practice their skills and services in the homes of their clients, particularly when attending and assisting in natural childbirth.  The practice of midwifery is most often associated with natural birth and with care, support, and encouragement given before, during, and immediately after labor and delivery.  However, midwives can serve as primarily healthcare providers throughout a woman’s life.  Midwives can be educational resources and counselors for women, as well as suppliers of healthcare services.

Completing a program of study at a midwifery school in New Jersey can prepare you for a career as either a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) or a certified midwife (CM).  Certified nurse-midwives receive their primary training as nurses and then specialize at the graduate level as midwives.  Because CNMs are also registered nurses, they can work in the same medical facilities that any other nurse could work in.  In New Jersey, CNMs may find exciting career opportunities in hospitals such as Atlanticare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, Bergen Regional Medical Center in Bergen, Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark.  In New Jersey, third-party reimbursement is mandated for CNMs, and they are legally authorized to write prescriptions.

Certified midwives in New Jersey generally pursue an educational program at the undergraduate level in a healthcare field other than nursing.  At the graduate level, CMs pursue an educational program or apprenticeship in midwifery, or a combination of the two.   Both certified nurse-midwives and certified midwives in New Jersey are required to take a national certification examination in order to become certified.
