Lactation consultant training in New Mexico requires general health education courses such as anatomy and physiology, nutrition, child development, medical terminology, and sociology, along with specialized coursework in lactation and at least 300 hours of clinical experience. Although not required, it is very helpful to obtain at least a bachelor’s degree as well as licensure in the medical field (many lactation consultants are registered nurses who have received additional training).
