How to Become a Medical Technician in New Mexico

Steps to Become a Medical Laboratory Technician in New Mexico

New Mexico does not make certification mandatory. However, many employers will bypass your application for an applicant who became certified. The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and the American Medical Technologist (AMT) are your two certifying agencies. In order to receive certification by ASCP or AMT you will need the following qualifications:

  • By the time you are ready for certification, it is assumed you have gained field experience in lab procedures gained through programs offered online or through campus based New Mexico medical technician schools
  • You must have an understanding of technical aspects of specimen collection and analysis
  • It is expected you will know how to operate the lab equipment and follow all quality control measures and safety requirements.
  • Ability to recognize unexpected results is important especially as it pertains to machine failure, giving a false result.
  • You are expected to have strong interaction and assessment skills and use of good judgment.
  • It will be required that you have the ability to teach others the skills you have learned.

Once you meet these requirements, you are ready to send in your application.

There are three simple steps in order to take the exam

  • You will fill out an application and send it in to either agency with the required fees.
  • Once your application is received, you will obtain an exam date. The exam may be offered at an approved testing site and will be easier to work it into your own schedule. When you leave the testing center, you will know whether you passed or failed.
  • At this point, you need to wait for the official notification and certificate to arrive in the mail.
There is a written portion of the exam and hands on section. In the latter section, you will be given the opportunity to display your knowledge and skills in an actual lab setting.
Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Medical Technicians in Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Santa Fe, Rio Rancho and Roswell, New Mexico may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the St. Vincent Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital and Memorial Medical Center.
