How to Become a Dental Assistant in New York

Dental assistants can work in a very limited capacity within the state of New York if unlicensed so it is very important to take the necessary coursework and gain clinical experience to be fully qualified as a dental assisting professional. The following steps should be carefully observed as you pursue a career as a dental assistant.
  1. Graduation from high school or the equivalent of a high school diploma is the first important step you can take to become a dental assistant.
  2. Completion of a dental assisting program that has been approved by the New York State Education Department.
  3. Provide proof of an infection control course, which you should cover within a formal educational program, as listed above.
  4. Pay the $103 licensing fee, which includes your initial license and the three-year licensing period. Payment should be submitted with your application to take the licensing examination. You will be notified by mail if you have met all the requirements to take the board examination.
  5. Complete a CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) course and/or check to see that your CPR card is up-to-date.
  6. Finally, take the New York State Dental Assisting Licensure examination offered by the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc (DANB). All dental assistants wishing to work in New York as licensed professionals must take and pass the New York State Dental Assisting exam. You are then considered a registered dental assistant in New York.
  7. If you desire to administer dental anesthesia as a dental assistant, New York law requires that you take additional coursework and obtain a Dental Hygiene Restricted Local Infiltration Anesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Analgesia Certification.
