The most important component of medical transcriptionist education is finding a program that is accredited and approved. Many of the programs offered by brick-and-mortar New York medical transcription schools can also be completed totally online, with no classroom attendance required. Most medical transcriptionist training programs entail approximately 450 clock hours, or two semesters.  Prerequisites usually include things such as ability to type 50 corrected words per minute and a score of 86 or higher on the Accuplacer English test. Most programs require a passing grade of 85% or better to graduate.  Some of these programs award graduates with associate's degrees, while others offer diplomas or certificates indicating your graduate status.
