Renewal periods run anywhere from one to ten years, depending upon the organization that issued the certification, and require anywhere from 1.8 credit hours (to renew certification through the National Phlebotomy Association), up to 5 credit hours (for renewal through the American Medical Technologists agency). Coursework must take place in the field of phlebotomy, or in a related laboratory sciences curriculum, and must be approved by the governing agency overseeing continuing education requirements for each certifying organization. Accepted areas of continuing education include attending healthcare seminars or workshops, teaching phlebotomy procedures and techniques to phlebotomy students in a healthcare facility, and CPR classes sponsored by a national organization, such as the American Red Cross.
