Steps to Becoming a Personal Trainer in North Carolina

According to an article in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, “although North Carolina does not have state licensure, the academics in North Carolina have begun looking at the role of personal training in the state.? This may suggest a move toward state licensing, but in the meantime potential personal trainers must select among several North Carolina personal trainer certification programs online. Be sure to select one that is either approved by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies or is otherwise deemed as acceptable by the field and its employers.

Because North Carolina does not require a license, the best places to pursue an education are through online programs.  After completing your education, you may consider becoming certified through one of these professional organizations.

Pick a date to take the examination three to six months in advance, so that you have time to review materials, read textbooks, view webinars, take classes, and study in other ways. Make sure you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities you will need to demonstrate.

The American Council on Exercise offers computer-based exams in most major metropolitan areas. Two pieces of identification, one with a picture, are necessary to take the exam. It covers the areas of exercise science, assessing fitness, program design, instructional techniques, and nutritional issues. The test includes 150 multiple-choice questions and two written simulations addressing real-life problems. You can register from 15 days to six months in advance of the text.

Knowledge and skills addressed on the exam include biomechanical concepts, training adaptations, anatomy, exercise physiology, and program design as well as information about special populations.

Professional Associations for Personal Trainers in North Carolina

The only true professional association that includes sports training is the American College of Sports Medicine. Under its umbrella is the Southeast Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine, which covers North Carolina and other Southern states. The association focuses on sports medicine and exercise science with the goal of bringing together research, education, and practical applications in the field. Its ultimate goal is to help people maintain their fitness and health. You do not need to belong to the national organization to join this regional one. Each year the chapter sponsors an annual meeting and also offers opportunities to attend conferences and workshops sponsored by its parent organization, the American College of Sports Medicine.
