In North Carolina there is a state wide organization dedicated to representing veterinary technicians. The NCAVT – North Carolina Association of Veterinary Technicians, started as a small core group of technicians’ in1980. With a membership of 62 people, in 1987, the group officially became known as the North Carolina Association of Veterinary Technicians. Early in their existence, they were faced with a critical piece of legislation. In 1992, the NCAVT was involved in passing Bill 747. This legislation dictated that in order to be a veterinary technician in North Carolina, one must have graduated from an AVMA accredited program, pass the national exam as well as successfully pass a State administered exam. This important legislation maintained the professionalism of veterinary technology and made evident the respect legislators have for the very difficult and challenging career as a veterinary technician. The association continues with the purpose of providing communication to its members, maintaining high ethical standards and advocating for good working relationships with the licensed veterinarians in the state. They encourage a professional image of their members and offer annual continuing education. The Spring Conference, traditionally held in March, offers continuing education for the veterinary technicians of North Carolina, thereby providing an opportunity for members to earn the required continuing education
