Nurse Practitioner Program in Massachusetts - MA

In most cases, becoming a nurse practitioner requires years of study beyond the typical education required of a registered nurse (RN). A nurse practitioner falls under the heading of Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) and must complete graduate studies in order to practice legally in Massachusetts. Nurse practitioner programs in Massachusetts train RNs to work in advanced practice and offer a variety of different specializations.  Depending upon one’s ultimate goal, studies may center on working with adults, children, critical care, the elderly, or as an educator.

While some courses may be available online, many are hands-on and therefore must be taken in person. Typical courses found in an NP program, regardless of specialization, include the theory and practice of advanced practice nursing, advanced health assessment, pharmacology, epidemiology, health promotion, advanced pathophysiology, as well as clinical practicums. Clinical NP experience will customarily take place in community clinics, hospitals and physician’s offices. A master’s level NP program usually takes about two years to complete. If you enter a program without an RN license or with a bachelor’s degree in a field other than nursing, your master’s studies in an NP program may take a bit longer to complete. Doctoral programs for nurse practitioners are also available in Massachusetts, enabling students to work towards a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or a PhD in Nursing. This advanced graduate work is helpful for those who intend to take leadership roles or professorships as an advanced practice nurse.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring nurse practitioners in Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Cambridge and Lowell, Massachusetts may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Massachusetts General Hospital, Winchester Hospital, Harvard Medical School and Marlborough Hospital.
