Upon finishing your college degree, you will then be certifiable with either the Clinical Nutrition Certification Board (CNCB) or the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists (CBNS).

The CNCB offers a CCN (certified clinical nutritionist) certification to all students have at least an associate’s degree. In order to get this title, you will need to successfully pass the test that is administered by the CNCB. There is a non-refundable fee for this test of $450.

The CBNS offers a slightly more specialized title, known as the certified nutrition specialist (CNS). Because this title is considered to be a specialty designation, you must have at least a bachelor’s degree to be eligible for the test. Once you pay the fee of $350 and pass the test, you will then be certified by the CBNS.

Recertification

Both of these certification levels require you to recertify and continue your education. This is a check-and-balance system that is used to confirm that you are up to date on all of the many changes occurring daily in your profession.

As a CCN, you must take no less than 40 credit hours during every two years. As a CNS, you have to take at least 75 credit hours during every five years. There will be an associated fee for recertification, but you will not be required to retest.
