Pharmacy Technician Certification in Ohio - OH

An individual who wishes to become a pharmacy technician must have the self-discipline to enter an Ohio pharmacy technician certification program. Though the profession of a pharmacy technician is extremely strict, over 1,300 individuals are employed in the state of Ohio. These numbers are only projected to increase as the pharmaceutical industry continues to expand.

How to Become a Pharmacy Technician in Ohio

Due to the adoption of Emily’s Law, it is now an Ohio state law that an individual must be a registered pharmacy technician in order to be employed as one. The Ohio State Board of Pharmacy has set up specific requirements in order to obtain a valid license to become a pharmacy technician.

Requirements:

Must be at least 18 years of age
Must be of good moral character and behavior habits
Must have obtained a degree in pharmaceuticals from a Board approved school of pharmacy or related program
Must have adequately completed at least the minimum qualifications of a pharmacy internship
Must have successfully passed the licensure examinations required by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy

Internship Requirements:

Individual must have adequately completed at least 60 semester hours of an approved pharmacy program and be enrolled in a pharmacy school

Individual may also apply for internship if they already possess a pharmacy degree

Each person wanting to become a pharmacy intern must submit the application to the State Board of Pharmacy
Must pay the application fee of $22.50
Must submit official sealed transcripts and documentation certifying the individual is actively working towards becoming a registered pharmacy technician and enrolled in courses at an approved pharmacy school
The intern must complete 1,500 hours in an approved and structured practical internship following acceptance of licensure as an intern

Credit can only be obtained after successfully passing practical and academic coursework
Up to 500 hours can be earned at other sites distributing dangerous drugs, rather than strictly pharmacies, only after a formal request has been approved
All internship hours must be documented and deemed valid by an approved supervisor
