Pharmacy Technician Training and Education in Oklahoma
The State of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy feels very strongly about protecting the health and safety of its citizens by establishing and enforcing regulations designed to ensure the proper handling and distribution of drugs, medicines and other substances found in pharmacies throughout the state. Oklahoma pharmacy technician schools cater to the expectations of the state board and local employers in providing one of the most comprehensive educations available.
With the goal of raising the level of professionalism of pharmacy technicians, the Oklahoma Pharmacy Board has publicly stated that pharmacists in Oklahoma must improve the training and supervision of individuals who want to work as pharmacy technicians.
Therefore, the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy has issued guidelines that are to be regarded as minimum education standards for pharmacy technicians. A pharmacy technician training program must be taught in any pharmacy that wishes to employ pharmacy technicians, with the program itself as the responsibility of the pharmacy manager.
The training guidelines can be obtained at www.pharmacy.ok.gov.The Pharmacy Technician training manual, developed by the Oklahoma
Pharmaceutical Association (OPhA), can be found at http://opha.phase2online.com/Portals/0/docs/Techmanual.pdf.
The training itself consists of two parts, initial training and training as part of the everyday work in a pharmacy.
Phase 1 training includes the parameters of the pharmacy, its organizational chart and the roles of each individual within the department, customer service and communications techniques, reference sources, and the pharmacy library, as well as the duties that the pharmacy technician will be expected to perform, such as preparing medication. Also covered will be the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPPA), pharmacy rules and laws, and importantly, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) rules and regulations.
During Phase 2 of the training, the pharmacy technician works under the guidance and supervision of the pharmacist.
