Lactation Consultant Schools in Oregon - OR

Lactation consultant training in Oregon that is structured to enable medical professionals to specialize in providing the latest information about breastfeeding and lactation to expectant mothers and new breastfeeding families is widely available throughout the state.

In response to the nursing shortage in Oregon, the Oregon Consortium for Nursing Education (OCNE) was established in 2001 as a partnership of community colleges and public and private university schools of nursing, including colleges in cities such as Portland, Salem, Eugene and Gresham, with the goal of expanding opportunities for students to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. As a result, more students can enter this rewarding field. Many lactation consultants have attained the minimum of a bachelor degree in a health care field, such as nursing, with many going on to earn higher academic degrees.

When scheduling classes, keep in mind that to become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant beginning in 2012, students must have successfully completed a minimum of one course at an accredited college or university in the following areas: biology, human anatomy, human physiology, nutrition, psychology, infant and child growth and development, introduction to research and sociology.

In addition, supervised clinical experience assisting breastfeeding mothers and infants is required.
