The United States currently has no federal guidelines required to become a Medical Biller and Coder other than the successful completion of an accredited training program. There are many options for completing an Oregon medical billing certificate. Programs are offered both online and in educational facilities. Although no certifications are required for entry-level positions, most employers hire those that have sought a certification or further academic training. There are many certifications available for a Medical Biller and Coder.

After successfully completing an accredited Medical Biller and Coder training program and achieving at least 6 months of documented full time employment, the exam can be taken for medical billing and coding certification in Oregon. The exam covers an individual’s skills and knowledge needed in this profession. This exam takes about 2 hours to complete. Upon the successful passing of the exam, the title of a Certified Billing and Coding Specialist will be awarded to a Medical Biller and Coder.

Continued Education

After becoming a Certified Billing and Coding Specialist, further education can be sought to promote the success of a career in this profession, and to achieve further certifications. Many of the continued education course can be completed at home or in a vocational school setting. Other educational courses can strengthen a Medical Biller and Coders skills in a specified medical field, such as anesthesia coding or radiology coding. Suggested courses for continued education can include specified health insurance codes, such as Blue Cross. Many of the advanced certifications in this profession require continued educational course in order to apply for a certification or for the renewal of a certification.
