Educational Requirements for Veterinary Technicians in Oregon

In Oregon, veterinary technicians need to have completed high school and two years of a veterinary technician program from one of the accredited online or campus based Oregon vet tech schools.  A two-year degree can be completed in as little as sixteen months, depending on the student’s course load each semester.  Only students that complete programs that the AVMA have approved are eligible to take the VTNE examination.  Colleges and technical schools that offer the two year accredited veterinary technician program are listed on the AVMA website

A typical curriculum for students in a veterinary technician program in Oregon will include the standard two-year degree coursework:

  • Math

Veterinary technicians in Oregon must complete at least 15 hours of continuing education courses every two years to renew their state licensing.  Continuing education course requirements can be fulfilled through coursework, seminars, or scientific workshops and proof of completion must be presented when applying for renewal of the state license.
