Lactation Consultant Salaries in Pennsylvania - PA

The average salary for a lactation consultant across the United States is $82,000, according to the online job search website For Pennsylvania as a whole, the average yearly salary is $75,000; the average annual salaries for lactation consultants in major cities throughout the state are Philadelphia: $71,000; Pittsburgh: $65,000; Allentown: $63,000; and Erie:  $65,000. Please note that the range of salaries may vary, based upon the level of education and the experience. Those lactation consultants who have achieved the professional designation of an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) may also benefit from more employment opportunities, including higher salaries.

Many private practices of obstetricians and pediatricians and midwives in Pennsylvania employ lactation consultants. Hospitals often offer breastfeeding counseling and education classes for the mother both prenatal, and after delivery, while the mother and baby are in the hospital.  Lactation consultants also provide consultation after delivery and discharge. In addition, many hospitals now offer a Warm Line for telephone consultations with a breastfeeding specialist. Lactation consultants are on staff at the Albert Einstein Medical Center, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Saint Luke's Hospitals and the Temple University Hospital. The Pennsylvania WIC Program, funded by the USDA, also provides nutrition and breastfeeding education to eligible women and uses the services of lactation consultants.
