Medical Transcriptionist Schools in Rhode Island - RI

Medical Transcription Schools in Rhode Island

Although Rhode Island does not require medical transcriptionists to earn a particular degree or take a particular series of courses, it is strongly recommended that aspiring transcriptionists earn an associate’s degree at a minimum and take a course of study specializing in medical transcription.  Courses in medical transcription can be found at a wide variety of educational institutions, including four-year colleges, two-year community colleges, online learning institutions, career institutes and professional schools, correspondence schools, and adult enrichment programs.  Medical transcription is especially amenable to home-based learning through online or remote courses and programs.

There is no agency or authority that formally accredits medical transcription schools and programs.  However, the Association of Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) evaluates medical transcription programs and adds those that meet its curricular and quality standards to its list of approved courses for medical transcriptionists.
Aspiring transcriptionists will find a range of degree programs, online courses, and professional schools on AHDI’s list, which can be found on its website at www.ahdionline.org.

When evaluating a medical transcription study program, AHDI examines its curriculum in five primary content areas: 1) Medical Knowledge, which includes medical terminology and basic medical concepts; 2)English Language, which includes spelling, grammar, syntax, and punctuation; 3) the Medicolegal Aspects of the Healthcare Record, which covers legal and ethical requirements for healthcare record management, including issues of confidentiality; 4) Medical Transcription Practice, which entails engaging in actual transcription, editing, and proofreading of dictation and medical records; and 5) Technology, which refers to the mastery of the software and equipment used by medical transcriptionists in their workplace.  The best medical transcription programs will include strong curricular offerings in all five of these subject areas.
