State Licensure

Currently, there is no mandate for holding a state license to work as a medical transcriptionist. Especially because you will not be required to have a state license as a medical transcriptionist, it is important for you to learn what you will need to do to learn how to become a medical transcriptionist in South Carolina.

Medical Transcription Certifications

After you have graduated from a program for medical transcription training in South Carolina, you will find that there are two types of certification that you can obtain from the AHDI. Those two certifications are the registered medical transcriptionist (RMT) and the certified medical transcriptionist (CMT). Specifically because there is no state license in South Carolina for this profession, having the RMT or CMT title will help you to become recognized within the industry as competent, valuable, and dedicated.

The RMT certification is entry-level and can be taken immediately upon graduation of an AHDI approved course. The CMT, on the other hand, cannot be taken unless you have the minimum of two years experience working in an acute care setting. The fees for these examinations are $200 and $275, respectively.
