South Carolina Nurse Informatics Certification - SC

Nursing and health informatics uses information technology to collect and manage medical information to help deliver the highest quality care to patients.  South Carolina healthcare settings are embracing this practice, and as they are throughout the country, nurses are leading the way, drawing on their clinical skills and computer experience to help create the best possible healthcare information systems.

Perhaps due to the rapid evolution of informatics as a medical profession making it a work still in progress, South Carolina does not require licensure for nursing informatics specialists.  However, there are credentialing choices open to individuals seeking South Carolina nursing informatics certification.  These options are well worth pursuing, as a nursing informatics certificate in South Carolina places its holder head and shoulders above their non-certified peers.  Certification provides accreditation, demonstrates knowledge, and exhibits commitment to the profession’s standards of excellence.
Two highly regarded national organizations administer nursing informatics certification examinations.  The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) offers an exam focusing on how informatics relates to nursing; the Healthcare Management and Information Systems Society (HIMSS) exam emphasizes the specialty’s information technology component.  Only practicing registered nurses can be certified through the ANCC, while HIMSS certification is open to all informatics professionals.  Candidate qualifications for taking both tests are tied to work experience and education.

ANCC certification lasts for five years.  It can be renewed with proof of 75 hours of a current RN license, continuing education, and 1,000 practice hours in the informatics area (  HIMSS certification lasts for three years and is renewable with evidence of 45 hours of continuing education in the informatics specialty (

South Carolina informatics specialists seeking ANCC certification must also meet state the following registered nurse licensing requirements (

  • Graduate from a South Carolina-approved nursing program
  • Pass the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX)
  • Pass state and national criminal record checks
