Salary for Occupational Therapists in South Carolina

Occupational therapy is a physically challenging and emotionally demanding career, but the rewards are great - helping people overcome injuries, illnesses or disabilities.  There are numerous job opportunities for occupational therapists in South Carolina.  In addition to hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes, the military also has occupational therapists at its hospitals and care facilities. To become an occupational therapist in the military, a person must have the proper degree from an accredited United States school and current certification and state license.  Military bases with medical facilities in South Carolina are Shaw Air Force Base, Charleston Air Force Base, Moncrief Army Community Hospital in Fort Jackson, Naval Hospital Beaufort in Beaufort County, and Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston.

According to the May 2008 United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 94,800 licensed and practicing occupational therapists in the country.  Salaries ranged from $42,820 to $98,310 with a median salary of $67,920, and varied based on factors such as education level, years of experience and type of employment. OTs in home health care jobs earned an average of $79,110 and OTs in elementary and secondary schools earned the lowest average salary of $61,590.  According to the same statistical reference, there were 1,150 licensed practicing occupational therapists in South Carolina.  According to this same publication, the average South Carolina salary was $58,260.

According to the salary listing at, the average salary of an occupational therapist in Charleston, SC was $67,000, which is 22 percent less than the national average.  In Sumter, SC, the average OT salary was $64,000 (26 percent below the national average) and in Greenville, the average salary was $61,000 or 29 percent below the national average.  OTs in Myrtle Beach, SC, enjoyed a little higher pay, with an average income of $81,000, which is only 6 percent below the national average, but OTs in Columbia, SC earned an average salary of only $58,000, which is 32 percent below the national average.
