Ultrasound Technologists usually spend three years in their associate's degree programs, which combine major classes, general education classes, and clinical experience. The major classes and clinical experience give students a background in ultrasound physics, echocardiography, mammography, neurosonography, and abdominal and vascular sonography, while the general education classes help students develop their  scientific reasoning, analytical, and verbal communication skills.

South Carolina wants to ensure that its ultrasound technicians are growing and changing with their profession, which means that they must obtain 24 continuing education credits each time they renew their license. Ultrasound technicians in South Carolina can take continuing education classes through an accredited college or university, the American Registry of Radiologic Technicians, the American Society of Radiologic Technicians, and other state-approved organizations.

All of South Carolina's ultrasound technicians should be healthy and capable of lifting patients, adjusting them, and helping them off the table. South Carolina's ultrasound schools require all their future applicants to undergo a full physical examination, vaccination schedule (measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis b, tuberculosis, and chicken pox), and tuberculosis scratch test to ensure all their ultrasound technicians meet these health standards. If students have not been vaccinated or have not undergone a physical examination, they should do so within 6 months of beginning an associate's degree program.
