South Dakota Careers in Healthcare Management - SD

Known as the land of Great Faces and Great Places, South Dakota is home to Mount Rushmore National Memorial and an abundance of beautiful recreation areas and state parks. For South Dakota, the service industry, along with health care, is one of the state’s largest economic drivers. South Dakota’s healthcare has been a growth industry since data was first recorded in 1972 and the trend has continued because of several reasons, such as a growing population and advances in medical technologies that enhance and prolong human life.

For those who may be considering a management career in healthcare, South Dakota offers opportunities for healthcare administrators or medical and health services managers throughout the state.  A healthcare administrator manages an entire hospital or medical system or may be in charge of specific clinical services or departments.

According to labor market information from the South Dakota Department of Labor, in 2006 there were 590 medical and health services managers within South Dakota. By 2016, projections show the number should increase by 16 percent to 690. Medical and health services managers are listed among the top 50 highest-paying occupations of those with a bachelor’s degree or higher within South Dakota, having an average annual salary of $74,000.
