How to Become a Speech-Language Pathologist in Virginia

Where can you wiggle your toes in the sand and see a slice of vintage Colonial America all in one day? Tucked between the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay, the Commonwealth of Virginia has something for everyone. Not only that, it is an inviting market for any aspiring Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). The average annual salary in Virginia for an SLP is just above the national average, at $106, 000. Interested? Here’s how to start:

1. Seize the Day. Becoming an SLP in Virginia requires dedication, time, hard work, and years of education. But you don’t have to be accepted to an official program to start. From the moment you decide this is your goal, no matter where you are on life’s path, there are things you can do to help prepare yourself to become a speech-language pathologist. Look around the community, and find places to volunteer with people who have speech and language disorders. It’s probably a good idea to test the water first, to make sure this is what you really want to do, before diving in to the long and rewarding journey ahead.

2. Pursue an education. Preparing to become an SLP can begin as early as high school. Throughout the nation, speech-language pathology and audiology programs all have one thing in common: They are intensely competitive.  Colleges will be looking for applicants that are at the top of the class. Also keep in mind that in Virginia, SLPs are expected to go beyond merely an undergraduate degree and must complete at least a Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology.  In Virginia, speech pathology graduate programs are accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

3. Get certified. Virginia SLPs must be licensed by the Virginia Board of Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology.
