Education for speech-language pathology and audiology in Alabama

There are a number of nationally-accredited speech pathology schools in Alabama that offer post-graduate programs in speech-language pathology and audiology. Students can enter an undergraduate program under the Department of Communicative Disorders to attain an undergraduate degree with a major in Communicative Disorders (Speech-Language Pathology), as well as a minor in Communicative Disorders (Speech-Language Pathology). After attaining an undergraduate degree, it is expected that the student enter a post-graduate degree program to attain a master’s degree and beyond in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.

Undergraduate students may have the opportunity to work in research along with a faculty member within the Department of Communicative Disorders. Speech-language pathologists (SLP) may be considered in the same category as special education teachers. As such, students in this field of study may be eligible for government education loan forgiveness programs by meeting specific requirements under the Stafford Federal Loan Forgiveness program and the Perkins Federal Loan Forgiveness Program.
