In order to have the proper educational background to succeed as a Speech Language Pathologist in Maine, students are required to have a master’s degree and complete a one year post- education fellowship that will allow them to be under supervision as they train in a hands on environment.

As an undergraduate, to properly prepare for the masters degrees, students should major in speech-pathology in order to remain competitive going into the graduate level. A rigorous course plan with classes ranging from the physical and biological sciences to psychology, communication and behavioral sciences is required. For some Maine universities, there is a 12 hour in-study minor that is a prerequisite to graduating.

The graduate level is a competitive two year program offered either online or through campus based speech pathology schools in Maine. Some universities offer the option of having a thesis or non-thesis program. Research opportunities are available and recommended no matter which option a student chooses. The program’s purpose is to prepare students for the professional level through individual attention via a practicum, which allows Professors and doctors to give hands on training for those students going to the next level. In order to be chosen for the graduate level programs, students must be certified by the American Speech & Hearing Association.

Once licensed, a Speech-Language Pathologist must renew their license every other year by February 28th. Before reapplying, 25 hours of continuing education should be completed. There is a $225 fee for renewal. If late in renewing, there is an additional $50 fee. For renewals that are 90 days late, the Pathologist must resubmit their original application data, including all of the fees involved with applying.
