Undergraduate and Graduate Education

Speech pathology and communication disorders students normally spend five to eight years in college. The length and cost of study weighs heavily on where the student plans to go to school (private or public, in-state or out-of-state, etc.), but the requirements for undergraduate and graduate study remain the same.

Undergraduate programs in Nevada combine theoretical concepts from the speech pathology and audiology fields, and provide students with opportunities to observe professionals and gain hands-on experience. Students take classes in fluency disorders, developmental psychology, speech mechanisms, aphasia and dementia, sign language, and other special topics.

Graduate programs offered by speech pathology schools in Nevada provide students with a more in-depth focus, concentrating on issues directly related to speech pathology. Students in these programs work under the supervision of a licensed professional for 300 clock hours, gaining direct contact with patients of all ages, ethnicities, religions, and subjectivities. Graduate curricula may include classes in articulation and phonology, differential diagnosis, language association in infants and toddlers, swallowing, aural rehabilitation, bilingual speech language pathology, multicultural issues, low incidence speech disorders, motor speech disorders, and other topics.

Continued Professional Education

Speech Language Pathologists in Nevada must gain 15 continuing education hours per renewal cycle, which must be gained before the end of the two-year period. They can use this requirement as an opportunity to gain more postgraduate education, or forward their understanding of how the profession is changing.

Continuing education units are available through ASHA, the Nevada Speech-Language-Hearing Association, an accredited college or university, or a private organization approved by the Board.
